The Spring 2013 Fieldbus Report is here and available for download from our web site. This issue was a little later than usual because we had a lot of new content to add, like a full write-up of our first ever live field demonstration of FOUNDATION for ROM at Petrobras, our General Assembly in Shanghai, and our recent seminars around the world. You can also read about our launch of Project Gemstone, which is designed to make fieldbus easier for end users. With all the talk about the new generation of smarter marshaling solutions for process control, Fieldbus Foundation has now joined the discussion and you can read about the benefits of VirtualMarshallingTM in the new report as well.
Another new and ongoing feature is "People in Fieldbus". Our spring issue profiles fieldbus pioneer Terry Blevins. We are truly grateful to have so many dedicated people that have worked hard to make fieldbus a success and we look forward to profiling new people in every issue.

Final Stats from General Assembly and More Presentations
We just got final attendance figures from our General Assembly in Shanghai the week of March 14th, and we are pleased to say that we had over 380 attendees registered for the event. This truly was the largest fieldbus related event to be held in China for some time and we look forward to coming back again. Shanghai is an amazing city and has changed so much in the seven years since I had last been there. And thanks again to all the sponsors and volunteers that made it all happen.
On another General Assembly related note, Mr. Ye Yingmin, Leader Engineer from Shanghai SECCO gave an excellent presentation on the everyday use of FOUNDATION fieldbus diagnostics. The Shanghai SECCO petrochemical complex is one of the largest in the world, and is also one of the largest fieldbus installations in the world with over 20,000 devices and extensive use of control in the field. Mr. Ye's presentations goes into extensive detail about how SECCO was able to achieve a true return on investment with fiedlbus through intelligent management of diagnostic data for both devices and the physical layer. This presentation is worth a read for those that want to get the most out of their diagnostic information.

Report from the 2013 General Assembly in Shanghai
I am pleased to say that the Fieldbus Foundation conducted a very successful (and crowded) General Assembly last week at the Portman Ritz Carlton Hotel in Shanghai. The General Assembly is our biggest event all year and includes our annual End User Advisory Council meeting, board meeting, and annual business meeting, but the real event is the end user seminar, which this year attracted over 250 attendees, most of them end users. Attendees were treated to a wide variety of presentations from some of the real automation visionaries in China. The Chinese market was really the springboard for FOUNDATION technology when fieldbus products and systems were first introduced, and remains a key market for us today. Many of the world's largest fieldbus installations are in China and include famous sites such as CSPC Nanhai, Shanghai SECCO, and numerous projects conducted by Sinopec Engineering.
Fieldbus Foundation President Rich Timoney opened the event by presenting a plaque to one of the distinguished fellows of the world of FOUNDATION fieldbus, Mr. Huang BuYu, Deputy Chief Engineer of Sinopec Engineering, who was a key early advocate of fieldbus technology in China. You can access a very good presentation by Mr. Huang from our previous general assembly in Shanghai back in 2006 here.
Fieldbus Foundation Chairman Dr. Gunther Kegel then introduced Sinopec Engineering Vice Chief Engineer Lin Rong, who discussed Sinopec Engineering's ongoing experience with FOUNDATION fieldbus throughout the plant lifecycle. An English version of Mr. Lin's presentation, as well as all the other presentations, will be posted to our SlideShare account by early next week.
You can get the full agenda for the End User Seminar here.
Other presentations during the day included:
Mr. Wei Hua
Equipment Technology Management
China Blue Chemical Ltd, CNOOC
Installation and Commissioning
Mr. Liu Zhiqiang
Guixi Smelt
Project Best Practices
Mr. Huang Weibo
Sinopec Beijing Yanshan
The Importance of Training
Mr. Bai Guo Hua
Director of Equipment Department
Laizhou Power Plant
Fieldbus in the Power Industry
Mr. Ye YingMin
Manager of Maintenance Dept.
Shanghai SECCO
Fieldbus Diagnostics and Maintenance
We were truly fortunate to get so many prominent local end users and we will be doing a brief feature on each one of these presentations over the next few weeks. I also gave a presentation on the current market outlook for fieldbus products and services, as well as an update on FOUNDATION for ROM technology. Dave Glanzer, Director of Technology Development for the Fieldbus Foundation, also gave a presentation on our overall technology roadmap.
I want to extend a big thank you to our sponsors as well. This event would not have been possible without their help. I think I can truly say that we had the largest display of FOUNDATION products and host systems under one roof. Our sponsors this year included:

New Videos Uploaded to Our YouTube Channel
We just uploaded three new videos to our YouTube channel and we have some more on the way. First we uploaded a two part series of lectures (parts 3 and 4 forthcoming) by Dave Lancaster, formerly of Bechtel and now a certified FOUNDATION Certified Training Program instructor. These videos were taken at the Beaumont, Texas end user seminar in 2011. Dave talks about some of the key elements of success for implementing FOUNDATION technology from the Physical layer perspective.

Report from the General Assembly in São Paulo
Many of us here at the Fieldbus Foundation, myself included, are just getting caught up after a very busy week at our General Assembly in São Paulo, Brazil last week (March 5-8). The main event at the annual general assembly is of course the end user seminar, which was held Wednesday March 7 at the Sheraton World Trade Center hotel and attracted around 240 attendees. It was a great crowd, most of it local to Brazil with lots of end users from companies like Petrobras, Braskem, Deten Quimica, Shell, and more. All of our major supplier partners were represented as well, and we attracted 20 sponsor companies that had their tested and registered FOUNDATION fieldbus solutions on display.
Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Richard Timoney and Chairman of the Board Dr. Gunther Kegel each gave brief addresses, both of which highlighted the importance of FOUNDATION fieldbus in rapidly developing economies such as Brazil. There is no question that Brazil will remain one our most important markets in the foreseeable future.
Keynote Address Highlights Petrobras' Large Investment in FOUNDATION Fieldbus
We were very fortunate to have Petrobras Director of Automation Mr. Ronaldo Magalhaes as our keynote speaker, who shared many of his positive experiences and lessons learned from the huge investment that Petrobras has made in FOUNDATION fieldbus. Petrobras has announced some of the most ambitious capital spending plans of any major global oil company, with an expected $224 billion in capital spending to develop an estimated 5 billion barrels of reserves through 2015. Most of this money will be spent in the upstream sector. FOUNDATION fieldbus is going to be a big part of the Petrobras automation strategy moving forward.
Other End User Presentations
Alexandre Pereira Lopes from Braskem shared his company's experiences with FOUNDATION fieldbus. Most of the intelligent field devices that Braskem has deployed are FOUNDATION fieldbus devices, and Alexandre had some good ideas about how to get the most out of the diagnostic data that is provided, as well as some application specific examples. Alexandre Santana of Deten Quimica talked about their extensive use of HSE and control in the field.
Clelio Alves of Petrobras discussed the implementation of a FOUNDATION fieldbus project from an engineering perspective. Marcos Peluso of Emerson Process Management discussed ongoing research into the performance benefits of control in the field being done by UK-based independent consulting firm ISC. Miguel Borges of Petrobras discussed efforts to found another Fieldbus Certified Training Partner location in Brazil through the LEAD training center. English versions of some of these presentations will be forthcoming (some are in Portuguese only, see links below).
FOUNDATION for ROM in Brazil
We also had the opportunity to bring our FOUNDATION for ROM demonstration unit to Brazil. I did my presentation on the business value of the technology and Dave Glanzer, our director of technology, did an excellent job describing the FOUNDATION for ROM specification and the details surrounding our demo unit. For an explanation of the demo unit you can see this video shot in conjunction with Peter Welander of Control Engineering. Petrobras has volunteered to provide an end user demonstration site for our FOUNDATION for ROM field demo program, which will take place over the next 18 months at various end user sites around the world. Other end user participants include Reliance refining in India and Saudi Aramco, and two other major end users.
End User Council Meeting
Our End User Advisory Council meeting was held on Tuesday March 6. EUAC chairman John Rezabek of Ashland Chemical as usual did an excellent job leading this meeting and we came up with several new ideas on how we can work on improving the end user experience with FOUNDATION fieldbus. We will be announcing more about these plans as we form working groups and develop a roadmap. One of the great strengths of the Fieldbus Foundation is its large degree of end user involvement, and we managed to recruit some new members to the council in our visit to Brazil. Fore more information on joining the EUAC, please send me an email.
Other Happenings
The General Assembly was also host to our annual business meeting and board of directors meetings, which had excellent attendance. We also wish to extend a big thank you to our Brazilian Marketing Committee, which helped tremendously in organizing this event. We look forward to hosting the event in Brazil again! We also wish to thank our sponsors -- including ABB, Beamex, Beka, Belden, Emerson Process Management, Endress+Hauser, Fluke, Ivnensys, Metroval, MooreHawke, MTL Cooper, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, R Stahl, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Smar, Westlock, Yamatake, and Yokogawa.
